Welcome to the Theology Quest blog. This will be an interactive way of continuing the dialogue from class and begin to critically and analytically engage various forms of media. This blog is intended for students to present their ideas and experiences to various short stories, articles, pieces of artwork, songs, and movie clips. From time to time I will post content that students will be asked to comment on or present in class. Each class will have small groups who will be responsible for initiating both in-class and online conversation.
Let the conversation begin.

When people say that they want to be something, that is what they desire, but that doesn't mean that is what they were meant to do. For example, someone may want to be a doctor but not have the intellegence level required for this field meaning they were not meant to be a doctor. They only desire to be something they were not meant to be.
The difference is that when people say that they want to be something, they could have the possible characteristics to become it. They could be perfect for that occupation, but what the question is, could they do better? That is when the other question "what are you supposed to be?" comes in.
That question is asking if your purpose in life is meant even more than you have realized. What if God wanted you for something more? What if he anticipated you to do something that will effect your life and others? That question to me seems more like a religious outlook on the purpose of our lives.
What people want to be and what people are supposed to be is not always the same. You may really want to be an astranaut but you have not gone to school in the area, which means that there is something else out there that you are supposed to do. Just because you may have the desire to achieve a certain goal or job does not mean that you are supposed to achieve that want.
What you want to be can be completely different from what you are supposed to be. Sometimes people are right as to what their ideal profession/life plan is, but it usually takes some soul searching and experience to find that one perfect path in life. Like "kelly l" said about being a doctor, you may realize what you wanted to be isn't what you are supposed to be. Naturally, this can seem like a let down at first, but it is all for the better because only what you "should be" can make you truly happy.
People change their ideas of what they want be all the time. As you get older, you realize that it might be harder than you thought to become what you wanted. What a person is meant to be is something that is constant. It is what you ultimately become in life.
You can view this question from a few perspectives. From a religious point of view, the difference may be that 'what you want to be' is not acceptable to your faith. However, from a cultural point of view, the difference is that 'what you want to be' corresponds with your internal desires, whereas 'what you're supposed to be' is determined by external forces.

In order to be what you want requires only that a person fulfill their most immediate desires. This requires a certain level of selfishness. One must look past the needs of others around them and only go for what it is they are concerned with and what will satisfy their desires. A person who is what they should be has a completely different set of actions. This type of person often submits to others expectations of them and acts to impress or entertain. A person like this will most likely not understand what it is that truly makes them happy as they will only be concerned with what others around them approve of.
What you are supposed to be is what will benefit society the most and is what you were born to do. What you want to be may be completely different and is something you are passionate about in life. sometime the two may be the same, while often they are different. I say follow your heart and you will end up where you are supposed to be.
When people say they want to be something, they are talking about a profession they want to have. They might even be talking about a quality they want to obtain, but being something, and doing what you're supposed to do are different. Being what you're supposed to be is more like finding what makes you more happy than anything else. The thing that you're good at, and enjoy spending your time on. Finding you're calling.
What your suppose to be could mean that it's what society or family influences you to be, but what you want to be is your ultimate desire that you dream of being. The difference is that what you want to be might not be reality as appose to what your suppose to be, which can turn out to be your search for meaning.
A person is very lucky if they want to be the same thing that they are supposed to be. What you are supposed to be means the path that has been chosen for you based on the talents, blessings, and limitations that a person has. What a person wants to be does not have anything to do with blessings or limitations but rather with that person's desires and dreams.
Being something that you want be is something for yourself. It's what your mind desires to feel fulfilled. Being what your supposed to be probably has some kickbacks for the rest of the world. Your position in life will also probably be something you like doing but the majority of it will revolve around others.
Depending on the person, what you want to be and what you are meant to be can be quite similar or completely different. What you want to be is what you desire most for yourself, but this desire may be restricted by certain limitations and therefore be unrealistic. On the other hand, what someone is truly meant to be is more realistic and never surpasses one's personal abilities. Being what youre meant to be involves realizing your calling in life and fulfilling it to the best of your abilities, resulting in true happiness
What people want to be can be the same from what they are supposed to be. What we want to be can lead into something that we are supposed to be. We don't have to be anything that we don't want to be. It is all your own choice. People pick job professions because they have a strength in that area and they want to do something that they are good at.
What you want to be and what you are suppose to be may be two entirely different things. In some circumstances, one's passion might not provide for their needs. For example, one's dream might be to become an artist; however, very few artists are successful enough to financially provide for a family. Some people might never find out what they are suppose to be.
